I moved to West Auckland two decades ago from Mumbai, India and have lived here ever since. I began my career as a journalist where I learned the art of storytelling and how to really listen to what matters to people. Those early years helped me develop a sharp eye for local issues and gave me the knack for turning complicated ideas into clear conversations.
Background
My career has spanned journalism, broadcasting, corporate communications, media relations and reputation management. This grounding in mass communications has taught me to listen and always put people first.
Community work
For over a decade I have been involved in the Indian community, serving as an elected office bearer for the Manukau Indian Association and chairing a charitable trust which is involved in community outreach programmes, food rescue, education, and public consultation. This has given me a ring-side seat to observe communities in action. I have worked closely with Auckland Council, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Development and local agencies to address real problems. I believe solutions work best when they’re created together, with real input from locals.
Career
I worked as an advisor in a government ministry after moving to New Zealand and have first-hand experience in policy making. I sit on the board of the New Zealand Bharat Chamber of Commerce and Industry helping Kiwi SMEs connect with Indian companies, I am a movie producer and my television productions put community stories front and centre.
Education
I hold a master’s degree in Digital Education from Massey University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Sector Management from Victoria University, which has given me the tools to understand local issues and find creative solutions. All these roles have helped me build the know-how and people skills one needs to get things done in local government.
I am married for the last 34 years. My wife and daughter work in the public sector and my son is an electronics engineer. My daughter-in-law is a psychologist. We are a close-knit family that values service, learning, and care for others.
Tick Kaunds, Roy
As West Auckland keeps changing and growing, I want to see our region thrive economically and be well-managed, inclusive, and a connected place where families flourish. If you’re looking for someone who listens, leads, and genuinely cares about local people, tick KAUNDS, Roy on your voting paper.
I want to spark ideas and drive positive change. I will be your voice in local government. I do not just want to sit at the table; I want to change the conversation around the table.
